The construction of the San Leandro building dates back to 1770, sponsored by Cardinal Belluga. It initially housed the school of the same name, where grammar and, above all, music and singing were taught. The only original element that remains is the old Baroque doorway.
In the 19th century, this building became an inn house. Apparently, it was one of the best places to stay in old Murcia. One of its most famous guests was the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen (author of children's stories such as The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, Thumbelina, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, and The Emperor's New Clothes, among many others). From the balcony overlooking the Plaza de los ApĆ³stoles, Andersen witnessed the only religious procession he ever saw in Spain.
The writer praised the exquisite gastronomy of Murcia - "it had been described to us as a most interesting city, where we would find even Arab vestiges and also the most picturesque costumes in all of Spain" -. He also wrote: "We lived in the square, right behind the magnificent Cathedral; the organ music and Gregorian chants reached us."
